I had a U.S. business years ago, but I’ve misplaced the paperwork. How can I find my old EIN number if I don’t remember it? Is there a reliable way to retrieve it from the IRS or other records?

You can find your old EIN by checking your original IRS confirmation letter (CP 575), past tax returns, bank statements, or other official business documents.
If you can’t locate those, call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line (1-800-829-4933) — they can confirm it once you verify that you’re the authorized responsible party.
If your business was dissolved, your EIN will remain permanently linked to that entity and generally can’t be reused for a new one. For non-residents, services like Business Globalizer and Steady Formation can help track down EIN records or apply for a new one if needed.
In short: check your old paperwork first, and if that fails, contact the IRS directly for official confirmation.
