I recently dissolved my U.S. LLC and I’m wondering what happens to my EIN. Does the EIN automatically dissolve along with the company, or can I reuse that same EIN to open a brand-new LLC? Since I may want to start another business in the future, I’d like to know whether the IRS lets me keep the old number or if I’ll need to apply for a completely new EIN

No, your EIN is not canceled when your LLC closes, but it also cannot be reused for a new entity. The EIN stays permanently tied to the original business, even after dissolution.
If you form a new LLC, the IRS requires you to apply for a new EIN. The old EIN stays on IRS records for historical tracking, but can’t be reassigned.
For non-residents, this process can feel confusing, which is why services like Business Globalizer and Steady Formation assist with both dissolutions and new EIN applications.
In short: once assigned, an EIN stays with that entity forever. If you start another LLC, you’ll need to request a fresh EIN.
