I’m a non-resident living in the U.S. on a work visa, and I plan to file my taxes soon. I’ve heard about ITINs for dependents but I’m not clear—what exactly is an ITIN, and when would I need to get one for my kids or spouse?

An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is needed for dependents who don’t have a Social Security Number, typically non-citizen and non-resident dependents. If your dependent doesn’t have an SSN and is unable to obtain one, you must apply for an ITIN so that the IRS can process taxes.
