If I owe zero, why does filing matter?

My income was really low this year as I focused on studying, so I don’t owe any taxes. But friends say I should still file a tax return. If I owe zero, why does filing even matter?

Because filing isn’t optional! Even if you owe nothing, the IRS expects you to file a return. It’s like checking in with them to say, “Hey, I’m following the rules.” Filing keeps your records clean, protects your business status, and even starts the clock for the IRS audit timeframe, so you’re not left hanging forever. But skip it; penalties will come crashing down without warning. A big one that must be mentioned.
