I run a small online store in the UK and my sales are starting to grow steadily. I’ve heard about VAT registration but I’m still unclear—when exactly does a UK business need to sign up for VAT? I want to stay compliant as I scale further this year.

Businesses that make over £90,000 annually in the UK must sign up for VAT. As of right now, this is the amount that businesses need to know to meet the standards for VAT registration. However, they can voluntarily register for VAT if their turnover is below this amount.
