How long does voluntary VAT registration take?

I’m thinking about registering for VAT voluntarily to reclaim input tax for my small UK business. Does anyone know how long voluntary VAT registration usually takes to process? I want to plan ahead for upcoming supplier purchases and invoicing.

Businesses with a taxable turnover of £90,000 or more in the last 12 months or expect to exceed the VAT registration threshold in the next 30 days are required to register for VAT.
