How do I apply for an ITIN online?

I’m living outside the U.S. and need an ITIN for tax purposes, but I’d like to do everything digitally if possible. I’ve heard about IRS forms and Certified Acceptance Agents, but I’m still confused. How exactly can I apply for an ITIN online? Do I need to send documents by mail, or is there a way to handle the whole process through the internet without risking delays or rejections?

You can’t apply for an ITIN entirely online through the IRS—they don’t have a full digital application system yet. To get one, you must complete Form W-7 and provide proof of identity/foreign status (usually a passport). You have three main options: mail the form and documents to the IRS, apply in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (by appointment), or use a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA).

CAAs are the closest to “online” because many now offer remote/virtual services. They can verify your passport via video call, handle the paperwork, and submit it directly to the IRS without you mailing originals. This is the most convenient option for applicants abroad.

So, while you can’t 100% self-file online, working with a trusted CAA gives you a smooth, semi-online process with fewer risks of rejection.
