I’m a nonresident with an ITIN and a dependent child who lives with me in the U.S. Can I claim the Child Tax Credit on my tax return, or do I need an SSN for that?

To qualify for the Child Tax Credit, the child must have a valid SSN issued by the Social Security Administration. Taxpayers with an ITIN can only claim the credit if their dependent meets this requirement. Without an SSN for the child, you are not eligible for this credit.
Need ITIN?
Get one with the assistance of an IRS CAA.
