Will I automatically get an ITIN when I apply for EIN?

When I apply for an EIN, I wonder if I’ll automatically get an ITIN too. Both are tax numbers from the IRS, but I’m not sure if they’re linked or if I have to apply for them separately. I just want to know if getting one means I’ll automatically receive the other, or if I need to go through a different process for the ITIN.

No—you will not automatically get an ITIN when you apply for an EIN. These are two separate numbers for different purposes. The EIN is your business’s tax ID, while the ITIN is your personal tax ID if you don’t qualify for a Social Security Number.

If you also need an ITIN, you must apply separately using Form W-7 with supporting documents. To make things easier, many non-residents work with services like Business Globalizer and Steady Formation, which guide you through both EIN and ITIN applications so nothing is missed.

In short: EIN = for your company, ITIN = for you personally. You need to apply for each individually.
