How do I know if my UTR is active?
How do I know if my UTR is active?
To determine if your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number is active, follow these steps to confirm its status:
After registering for Self Assessment with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), your UTR number will be sent to your registered address by post. This typically takes up to 15 days if you’re in the UK or 21 days if you’re abroad.
Once you’ve received your UTR number, create an account for Self Assessment on HMRC’s online portal.
HMRC will send you an activation code within 7 days (or longer for non-UK residents). This code is necessary to link your UTR number to your online account.
Use the activation code to activate your Self-assessment account. Once completed, your UTR will be fully active and ready for use in filing tax returns and other tax-related activities.
