Do payment processors (like Stripe, Splash and Braintree) use gateways like Authorize.net?

I’m trying to understand how payment systems work for my new eCommerce store. Do payment processors like Stripe, Braintree, or Splash use gateways like Authorize.net behind the scenes, or are they considered all-in-one solutions?

Neither Stripe nor Braintree use a gateway. Braintree is a gateway (though not just a gateway; it has a lot of other functionality). Stripe replaces your need for a gateway altogether.

There are traditionally two separate components in online credit card processing: a merchant account and a gateway. A merchant account is essentially an identifier on the credit card networks. A gateway is an entity which exposes a web API for submitting transactions to the card networks, assuming you already have a merchant account. The card networks are not themselves web accessible.

All of Authorize.Net, Stripe, and Braintree have access to the card networks and hence don\’t need to go through a gateway.
