What Makes a Merchant Different from a Vendor?

While setting up my eCommerce store, I noticed some platforms use the word “merchant” and others say “vendor.” Are they the same thing, or is there a clear difference between a merchant and a vendor when it comes to online business and payment processing?

A vendor is a general term for anyone who sells goods or services, including wholesalers or suppliers. A merchant, however, refers specifically to a retail seller who sells directly to consumers and usually has a merchant account with an acquiring bank.
