What is a third party payment gateway?

I’m setting up a small store and someone suggested using a third-party payment gateway. I’m not quite sure what that means. How is a third-party payment gateway different from a direct merchant account or a bank processor?

A third party payment gateway is the online service that allows a merchant or business to accept credit/debit cards. By third party this generally means that businesses original processor does not have the capability or their own gateway, so it is outsourced to another party. Your processor still will handle the processing side of things but the third party gateway would be used to gather the card info online. Think of it as your piece of hardware like a terminal but for your online customers.
