I’m an Indian freelancer working with U.S. clients. They asked me to apply for an ITIN for tax reporting. I’m unsure how to get started from India. Should I go to the U.S. embassy or send my documents directly to the IRS?

To apply for an ITIN from India:
* Contact an IRS-approved Acceptance Agent operating in India for assistance.
* Alternatively, visit your passport office to get certified copies of your passport (as proof of identity and foreign status).
Remember:
* Attach Form W-7 and the required documents to your U.S. Form 1040 tax return.
* Send this package to the ITIN Processing Center, not the Tax Return Processing Center. Once the ITIN is issued, the IRS will transfer your tax return internally for processing.
This ensures compliance with U.S. tax requirements.
